TRIPLE PLAY for CATV Operator
Through society’s development, only voice, television, or network is unable to satisfy the daily needs of people. The requirement of diversified services represents a higher demand for network operators, especially for traditional cable TV network operators. The original network is mainly a one-way video broadcast service. In the trend, the internet era is facing the transformation to multi-service integrated operators. The network must carry video, data, and voice service and must have the capability of two-way interaction, multi-service, and multi-function.
FTTH CATV solution of the Integration of Three Networks of Broadcast Television Operator
The integration of three networks means integrating services by adopting a new network structure to provide video, data, and voice services. The integration of three networks of broadcast television operators can be implemented based on the PON system. The principle is to combine the CATV PON system and FTTH CATV system by WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplex) technology to achieve the signal of 1550m, 1490m, and 1310m can be transmitted in the same fiber. The topology of the network structure, as shown in the following figure 1:

PON (Passive Optical Network) is a network system of P2MP (point to multiple points) that consists of OLT (Optical Link Terminal), ODN (Optical Distribution Network), and ONU (Optical Network Unit). Currently, there are technical FTTH CATV solutions for EPON and GPON.
In the network of integration of three networks, the FTTH CATV system’s signal is transmitted in the same fiber with the upstream and downstream optical signals of the PON system by adopting WDM technology. There are two kinds of downstream signals: CATV PON data signal with an optical wavelength of 1490nm and CATV broadcast signal with an optical wavelength of 1550nm. In upstream, there is a CATV PON data signal with a wavelength of 1310nm.

Introduction of the solution of three networks based on PON system:
OLT of the local side (Machine room) is the core of the CATV PON system. It provides uplink interfaces with high speed for information accessing, including voice, data, and PON interfaces for the passive optical distribution network. OLT is also the control center of the CATV PON system, by which the network management system accomplishes operations, management, and maintenance of the CATV PON system.
EDFA of the local side (Machine room) amplifies the received CATV front signal then transmits it. Its uplink interface connects the FTTH CATV front-end optical transmitter, and the downlink interface connects the input port of the WDM device.
WDM device of the local side (Machine room) is a passive device installed between OLT/EDFA and ODN with the function of multiplexing CATV downstream signal and PON signal of upstream and downstream together.
ONU of the user side provides interface for services such as data, CATV FFTH network, and voice. By applying Ethernet, GEM protocol, and other protocols, implement transparent transmission of user data in the CATV PON system. The output port of CATV service data (RF port) connects STB (Set to Box), then STB connects television for programs receiving.
ODN network between OLT and ONU, which is a passive optical distribution network consisting of optical splitter and optical fiber, distributes and converges optical signals. ODN network forwards downstream data to each ONU terminal and aggregates upstream data into the OLT device. Based on the actual application environment, multi splitters solution can be realized in ODN. One splitter solution is recommended.
